The Beautiful Pretender book review and Kindle #giveaway

I love books!  And I love having a steady stream of books flowing into the house because every once in a while you discover a new favorite author.  If Melanie Dickerson's other offerings are as good as The Beautiful Pretender, I'll be needing to read all of them.

The basic premise of the story is that Avelina, a lady's maid, is standing in for her mistress at a house party at another castle.  For 2 weeks.  She has to pretend to be nobly born, instead of a servant.  No wonder she stands out a little to the host, Lord Thornbeck.  In a Cinderella like twist, Lord Thornbeck has invited about a dozen ladies to this house party for the purpose of choosing a wife.

Avalina, acting as Lady Dorothea, has strict orders to make sure she is not chosen, since obviously she cannot marry him.  Yet, the Earl who is sending her in his daughter's place can't risk offending Lord Thornbeck by not having her go, and the real Lady Dorothea has run off with one of her father's knights.

You can see it coming, can't you?

But it's so much fun to read, even though you can guess what happens.  There's a bit of a Beauty and the Beast vibe to the way Avalina teaches Lord Thornbeck that servants are people, too, and he shouldn't be so rude and abrupt with them.  Lord Thornbeck undergoes a transformation from a gruff and cranky cripple to a daring and passionate defender of what's right, and ends up leaning on his cane less and less as he's too busy to remember his injuries.

Another of the maidens discovers Avalina's secret and exposes her in a way that humiliates both her and Lord Thornbeck.  But soon, they have bigger problems.  Another Duke has infiltrated the castle and is trying to take it over.

I really enjoyed The Beautiful Pretender.

Inheriting the new title of margrave means Reinhart has two weeks to find a noble bride. What will happen when he learns he has fallen for a lovely servant girl in disguise? Find out in the new medieval fairy tale, The Beautiful Pretender, by Melanie Dickerson. Despite Avelina’s best attempts at diverting attention from herself, the margrave has taken notice. And try as she might, she can’t deny her own growing feelings. But something else is afoot in the castle. Something sinister that could have far worse—far deadlier—consequences. Will Avelina be able to stop the evil plot? And at what cost?
